Mail Art Origami & Waxed Paper

Origami pinwheel envelopes

Here are the origami models I mentioned in the last post.  I made them from parts of an abstract linocut, Introspection, which I printed in the 1970s and recently coloured with pigment markers.  I then thought of making a larger pinwheel envelope out of waxed paper.  I put the others inside where they could be seen because of the semi transparency of the waxed paper.  Even before I enclosed the printed models, I enjoyed being able to see the  folded layers of waxed paper as I formed the envelope.  I may fold some other small models out of waxed paper for this interesting added dimension.  I then sent these off to a friend as mail art.

I’ve enjoyed folding origami models from time to time.  I find the practice calming.  I have never become wildly adept, but have tackled some modular origami and kusudamas.  Origami always seems like magic to me.  I become a child of wonder when folding models.  And so I enjoyed bringing origami, printmaking, the kitchen and post office together!
